The task of any vehicles suspension is to keep the tyres firmly in contact with the road, and give the motorist a comfortable ride. In days gone by road surfaces were very bad with, lumps, bumps and potholes to say the least, and accidents were caused by cars swaying and bouncing sometimes out of control all due to the conditions and surfaces of the road.
In the early days of the horse and carriage Obadiah Elliot’s invention of the leaf spring in 1804 partially addressed the problem with the use of these springs, and today springs such as Coil Springs, Torson Bars, and Leaf Springs, are used in conjunction with shock absorbers to dampen the vertical pressure of the road on the car. Primary purpose of the shock absorber is to control spring and suspension movement.
In 1926 Monroe invented what was considered to be the first Shock Absorber known as the ‘shock Eliminator’ In a survey recently carried out for Monroe a world leader in the manufacture and supply of shock absorbers shows that most people are unclear about their function and when there is a need to replace them. Shock absorbers not only affect the handling of a car but can also effect a car’s braking, and so vitally important to have them checked regularly and replaced if worn.
The motorists on the whole do not acquaint themselves on how the systems of their car work, and when talking of suspension in your vehicle, we are talking about springs that suspend the weight of the vehicle and absorb shocks when driving over rough surfaces. All vehicles have suspension systems and the component parts being sway bars, the shocks and struts. Knowledge of the system and component parts of your vehicle will be easier if something should go wrong thus enabling you to have an idea of the problem.
A spokesman for Elite Direct said “problems with suspension units are often only detected once they become worn or faulty; we do sports and performance suspension and have types and brands for all makes of cars. We also stock a wide range of products from suspension struts, coils or shocks”.
