Safety Tips For Female Drivers

By Rochelle

Whether you have hired a car or are driving your own vehicle, female drivers should exercise a little caution when out on the roads alone. The risks of driving alone are often exaggerated
and the majority of female drivers will not experience any problems when out on the roads.

However, following a few simple tips to make your journey safer can make a difference. One of the most important things to staying safe on the roads is to be driving a car that will keep you safe. A vehicle that is likely to breakdown or which has been kept in a bad condition could stop without warning leaving you in a difficult predicament. To avoid this it is worth getting your car serviced regularly and that you have good motor insurance and breakdown cover. The car manufacturer publishes guidelines on how often their vehicles need to be serviced. Search for a reputable garage to carry out to the servicing so you can feel confident that the work being carried out will keep your vehicle on the roads.

Before you travel make sure that you check your water and oil levels. If these are not topped up regularly they could cause a mechanical fault to the car, which may lead to a breakdown. The tyres are also important to keep an eye on. If the condition of the tyres becomes poor or the pressure is not sufficient, the result could be a blowout whilst you are driving. Always make sure the spare tyre is also in a good condition in case you need to use it. Watch for warning lights that may appear and don’t ignore them when they do. If a warning light does come on it is wise to stop the car safely and check whether it is safe to continue driving.

The car’s handbook should give details of the meaning of all the warning lights and whether it is safe to drive or not. When you are on the roads, it is wise to keep an eye on your fuel gauge and avoid running out of fuel.

Don’t wait until the warning light comes on before looking for a garage to refuel. Before you start on your journey, make sure you know where you are going and plan your journey in advance if you are taking an unfamiliar route. Carry a mobile phone if you are able in case of emergencies.

Before you use your phone though, make sure that your vehicle is stopped with the engine off and parked in a safe place so not to obstruct other cars. If you think your vehicle might breakdown try and keep going until you can stop in safe and well-lit place. Then keep all doors locked whilst your phone for help. Any mechanic or breakdown patrol will carry proof of ID so ask for this before unlocking your vehicle. Hopefully the mechanic will be able to get you back on the road or tow you to the nearest garage so you get your vehicle fixed. Driving alone as a woman is more about being sensible rather than there being any real inherent danger. Bear these simple tips in mind next you are driving alone and you should no problems out on the roads.
