Finding Cheap Student Auto Insurance

By David Deffenbaugh

Being a student and getting automobile insurance has its advantages and disadvantages. Not only that, there are some insurance opportunities that may be ideal for a student’s circumstances.

Of course one of the biggest concerns in acquiring automobile insurance for a student (and anyone else for that matter) is cost. Students typically fall within the age group that has the highest insurance premium rates; that is the 16 – 25 year old age group.

Unfortunately this age group has the highest incidence of accidents and claims. That’s not going to change and therefore those higher rates will remain. One point to be aware of, though, is that some insurance providers do consider the adult age range to begin at 23 instead of 25.

Since students are typically going have higher insurance rates, it’s even more important to pursue the available discounts. One particularly available to students is the good student discount. This is provided for students who maintain at least a “B” grade average. This discount ranges from 5% to 10%.

Another discount can be obtained through driver’s education courses. This is usually applicable to younger drivers. Qualifying driver’s education programs can result in discounts of up to 15%.

A discount not often considered is found with driver safety programs offered directly through insurance companies. You will have to inquire with your insurance provider to see if these programs and discounts are provided.

Besides discounts, cheaper insurance rates can be found by comparison shopping. Finding cheaper rates is possible with the student’s age group probably more so than any other group. Insurance companies do not all compute younger driver rates in the same way. The easiest way to do these comparisons is online. Many rate comparison sites can be found and in a matter of minutes, you can be well on your way to finding the cheapest rates.

A student who may not drive all the time (this may apply mostly to college students) is a prime candidate for temporary or short-term car insurance. This insurance is available for from 1 to 28 days. Great savings could be had for a college student who only drives to and from college at the beginning and ending of semesters and uses other transportation instead of paying monthly premiums.

Students are faced with many options and opportunities when it comes to car insurance.
