When you are a car owner you will be familiar with the little sounds and slight, but nonetheless noticeable, differences that let you know when your car is experiencing trouble. Humans have a strange relationship with their cars, it could be said. Most of us (secretly) name our cars and when something goes wrong, it is not rare to panic slightly and scramble to get it fixed. It is not totally dissimilar to the tendency for a parent to want to get their child to a doctor quickly if they show any signs of being unwell (although it is important to remember that there is a difference). We all know that getting a car seen by a mechanic within a short time of any faults developing is absolutely essential.
What is equally, or even more important, is getting the car seen by a good mechanic. Taking your car to the right person can be absolutely instrumental in getting it fixed properly, conclusively and in a way that guarantees that it won’t need to be taken back in for the same problem. Finding a good mechanic is not as easy as finding a good hairdresser or a good caterer – in those cases, a bit of trial and error is almost taken as read. Taking your car to the wrong mechanic can result in it developing secondary faults, and if that mechanic is the only one you know, you shorten the car’s useful life every time you take it back to them.
To find the right car mechanic, you need to be prepared to put in a lot of ground work. Not only do you need to be ready to ask around your friends, you need to take into account the kind of car each friend drives. One mechanic may do an excellent job of repairing Fords, but be relatively useless when it comes to fixing a Hyundai, for example. It is worth seeking out the advice of people you know who have the same car as you do. Additionally, you need to consider whether it might be worth traveling outside your home town or even county to find the right mechanic. It may be a lot of extra effort on a one-off basis, but if they are a good mechanic you will have fewer return trips.
In addition to this, going on a scouting mission is something that cannot be overestimated in terms of importance. What this entails is driving around town to check out mechanics’ facilities. If the lot always looks busy, clean and has quality vehicles on it, that tells you a lot about how good a garage it is. People with expensive cars are willing to trust that garage, the standards are clearly high there and the mechanics are highly rated when it comes to doing work. A combination of different criteria will allow you to identify the best mechanics’ garage in your locality – and perhaps save you a great deal of money into the bargain.
