Natural Gas Cars: Another Option for the Honda Civic

By Seth Hassell

As if Honda didn’t offer enough options with the Honda Civic, you also have the option of buying a Civic that runs on natural gas. Didn’t even know such a vehicle existed? Many Americans don’t. However, the NGC is a great eco-friendly alternative to a hybrid at about a 10-15% discount from the Honda Civic Hybrid sticker price.

What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas, as opposed to petroleum, occurs when plant and organic matter decay. It’s made up of methane and other hydrocarbon gases, for you chemists.

Cars that could burn natural gas came on the market in the 1930s, although interest waned until the oil shortage of the late ‘60s. Still, Americans have shunned this natural alternative to petroleum until recently, due to lack of facilities to fuel these cars.

Today, there are more than 1300 natural gas refueling stations available for NG vehicles. If you own a Honda Civic GX (Honda’s natural gas car), it comes with a personal natural gas pump you can have installed into your home gas system.
The Honda Civic GX

Rated the world's cleanest internal-combustion vehicle by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Honda Civic GX releases virtually no emissions. The GX gets about the same mileage as a traditional Civic, at 24 miles to the gallon in the city and 36 on the highway.

While the Honda Civic GX costs around $7,000 more than the LX, buyers can qualify for tax credits and incentives, like the Federal Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit, which is worth up to $4,000. You may also qualify for other incentives like the Alternative Fuel Excise Tax Credit, so ask your dealer for details.

The cost of natural gas for the Civic is cheaper than petroleum gas (in Utah, natural gas is about $.63 per gallon), so factor in that savings. In addition, you do not have to go to the gas station!

Honda Civic GX Benefits

Get a more environmentally conscious vehicle for around the same price as a traditional Civic (after incentives and credits)
Put no pollution into the atmosphere
Skip the gas pump line
Save $2 per gallon or more on gas!

More about the Natural Gas Civic

The Honda Civic GX can drive 220 to 250 miles on its natural gas tank; so many owners prefer to top off the tank each evening after driving. Filling the entire gas tank can take up to 16 hours, so drivers should plan accordingly.
